Tips for Choosing the Right Stereo for Your Car

The car stereo, also known as the ‘head unit’ or ‘deck’, is quite an essential accessory for a car. While it might not be the first essential add on for a car, it is one of the important ones. Having a great music system in your car only enhances the experience of driving. Whether you’re looking for the perfect car stereo for your car or thinking of upgrading the sound system of your car, there are some things that you should keep in mind while out in the market for a new car stereo.

  • Bluetooth Connectivity: Although quite a useful feature to have, this is something that you need to decide whether or not you want it for your car stereo. It does have many benefits, the number one being road safety. Bluetooth hands-free calling enables you to pick up calls while driving without diverting your attention from the road and keeping both your hands free to drive safely, as the name suggests.

  • Radio: The ability to receive radio signals is one of the most basic functions of any car stereo head unit. Before we had USBs, CDs and MP3 Players, most music was played via radio only. Today’s latest, technologically advanced stereo head units play much more than just AM radio, but it is an essential feature to have still. With digital radios or an HD radio feature, you can even tune in to digital broadcasts and other newer radio channels. Listening to the radio will even keep you up to date with the latest news and happenings in your city!
  • Price: Undoubtedly the first and foremost thing that you should do when you’re out in the market buying is to set a budget for yourself. This way, you will know which all products fit into your budget . Once you exclude the stereos that do not fit in your budget, you can look for the best one in the options available for the price range.
  • Power: A powerful head unit means better sound. The more power you have, the better the sound there will be. This is even true for the stereo is connected to a component speaker system. Be sure to compare the power specs with the industry standard.
  • Audio Sources: This is quite an important feature to look for in the head unit. Today, most of us have our music either on our phones or on iPods and/ or MP3 players, which means an auxiliary input is obviously required. Most units today feature all the audio sources, namely CD player, USB port and an Aux-in. Ideally, a car stereo should have all these but if you want to choose, then you can pick the one that has the source you use/ need the most.

  • GPS Navigation: Although most of us own smartphones that have Google Maps or some other navigation system built in them, have a head unit that is GPS enabled would be quite helpful, especially if you do not have an internet connection in the place where you’re lost. 🙂
  • Display: There are many types of display features available in today’s head units. You can go for a full video screen to get the complete music experience or get a simple LED read out unit that simply shows the title of the song and/ or the name of the artist. If you incline towards the video screen, keep in mind the visibility of the display in bright light, such as sunlight for some screens tend to wash out, spoiling the video experience. Look for high-contrast display in the head unit.

  • Equalizer Controls: Those who enjoy music a lot and prefer a high audio quality, would also want to be able to adjust the sound output according to their preferences. For them, equalizer controls are quite essential. With these controls, one can do a lot more than just volume control. You could turn up the bass and reduce the treble, or the other way round and can even customize the acoustics just the way you like it.

  • Aesthetics: Apart from being functional and equipped with the needful features, a head unit should also look good in the car. While it is not the most important feature to look at, we know most of us would want a decent looking head unit to match the interiors of our car and complement them.

  1. I like that you suggest to make a budget of how much you are willing to spend on a new stereo. I can see why this would help you not over spend. I think that it would also be helpful to make a list of the things you would like to have and the things that need. This could also help you narrow your search down.
