Optical Design
The Tokina SZ SUPER TELE 500mm F8 Reflex MF achieves an extensive 500mm focal length in a remarkably compact and lightweight form, courtesy of its catadioptric optical design. Mirror lenses utilize a combination of lenses and mirrors to reflect light back and forth within the lens. This unique structure effectively folds the light, reducing the overall tube length by half. Consequently, the lens's physical dimensions are approximately one-third that of a conventional lens, resulting in a lightweight design, as mirrors are significantly lighter than optical glass.
